A look at the St. Sylvester Science and Discovery Fair!
Hello families!
I am so proud to report that the kids in room 111 did a FANTASTIC job at the science fair! Not only did they work extremely hard on the experiments and lab manuals, they did a wonderful job presenting to the other students in our school. Our display was a multi-faceted, multi-media presentation on what matter is and how it moves from one state to another. We demonstrated solid to liquid, liquid to solid, liquid to gas, and gas to liquid. We also reported all our observations and results in a lab manual, which were also on display for everyone to read.
In addition to our display there were many other displays and performances that were very awesome! I have prepared a gallery below of not only our project but also other projects and the students that were involved. I thought the children (as well as myself) were entertained and learned a great deal about science and camaraderie!
Please enjoy a peek into the St Sylvester Science and Discovery Fair of 2012!

| Our display! |
| The kids getting everything ready. |
| Samantha loves her polymer rubber (aka silly putty). |
| Presenting to the 3rd graders! They did GREAT! |
| Mr. Bennett learning all about the states of matter! |
| Priya is enjoying some of the hands-on materials available. |
| Demetrius telling people about state changes. |
| Charlotte loves the lab manuals! |
| Mrs. Gilmore finding out about solids, liquids, and gases! Kylie knows her stuff! |
| Elias discussing the finer points of evaporation. |
| Even the 8th graders loved it! |
| The homemade rubber was a hit! |
| Mia loves to talk science! |
Just down the hall the pre-schoolers did great jobs with their projects too! Ms. Barrett's class had a gorgeous butterfly display accented by an adorable performance. Ms Marquez and Miss Nora's class did a fabulous dinosaur display, also with a song.
| It was like I was in the Mesozoic era! |
| Sweet faces....sweet projects! The art was wonderful! |
| Loving science! |
| 3 more scientists! |
| Delia LOVES dinosaurs! |
| The Caterpillar Song from Ms. Barrett's class. Through song Ms. Barrett taught her class the stages of metamorphosis for a butterfly....amazing! |
| Future entomologists! |
Finally, we went downstairs to view some selected middle school projects. We reminded the students that sometimes science is messy and then they saw just what we meant! In addition to the science experiments we saw two inventions that were totally awesome and extremely usable....both of which are helpful for a successful invention!
| This may have been the hit of the day!! This young man made an egg fit through a bottle top by combustion.....the kids liked the pop and the egg exploding! |
| This student did a great demo for Newton's law of inertia....also very cool! |
| This student showed circuitry and electricity making a bell ding! |
| Wilfredo was definitely a hit with his all over raincoat! He even included a pocket for your IPhone!! A good invention has demand and creates convenience...both were demonstrated in this coat! |
| Wilfredo demonstrates all the aspects of his all-over-raincoat! |
| I even tried it on! If I worked for Consumer Reports, I would give this coat a 5 star rating! |
| Natalie met the needs and wants of the modern artist by creating a cheap, edible glue with an extended shelf life! Wow! Another great invention! |
| The kids were excited to "eat glue!" |
| Melissa (one of our graduating 8th graders:) demonstrated the chemical reaction that occurs between a yeast solution and hydrogen peroxide. This creates an explosive reaction that often wows children...old and young! It is often called "elephant toothpaste." |
| The kids were asked to think of what would happen, or create a hypothesis. Then they waited to see what would happen! |
| Mia was asked to help the demonstration!! |
| Science was definitely messy on this day! Learning really can be fun!!! Thanks to Melissa for ending the day on a messy moment! |
Thank you to all the staff and families that participated in the event. It was truly a fun few days of science and learning!
Warmly,
Ms. Z
